In a nutshell
France could soon be powered by 100% renewable energy. This is Énergie Partagée’s goal for the world’s seventh largest economy, and they’re seeking to involve as many citizens as they can along the way. By using proven methods for community engagement and consultation, they ensure that local projects meet local needs.
Climate Problem
Renewable energy production is now a commercial enterprise, operating at a regional level. But the process is disconnected from local stakeholders, and the outcome often goes against their needs and wishes. Involving local communities from the start is critical to the success of renewable energy projects. Locals must also be provided with the tools, skills and financing to bring these projects to life.
But to embrace renewable energies, communities first must learn about the need to transition. This means addressing the lack of awareness through community engagement and education. Énergie Partagée knows projects succeed where communities have a sense of ownership, involvement, and benefit.
France is reliant on nuclear energy, its power plants using up to 3.8 billion litres of water a day. UNESCO projects that the global urban population facing water scarcity will reach 1.7–2.4 billion people by 2050. It is crucial to move away from nuclear power, and towards large scale energy projects that prove a transition towards sustainable energy sources is more viable.
Project Solution
Énergie Partagée is working to develop sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. To overcome opposition, they must be affordable, easy to live alongside (e.g. not hugely noisy), and with minimal impact on flora and fauna. These solutions can be brought to communities paired with education, financial backing and practical support.
Énergie Partagée brings a lot of experience with its nationwide work building solar farms, wind farms, and energy projects fueled by wood, biomass and geothermal energy. They build alliances with energy companies, local authorities, and citizens to create high quality projects that are fit for purpose.
Énergie Partagée has shown that large scale energy projects, when built by and for the community, have positive environmental and social impact. Their solutions also make cities more resilient – able to independently produce their own energy, and to be crisis-ready. For example, the organisation supports a solar farm project that will help keep Paris cool: protecting hospitals, aged care facilities and kindergartens from worsening heatwaves.

About the organisation
Énergie Partagée’s mission is two-tiered: they raise awareness of citizens’ opportunity to produce renewable energy in their region, and provide all the tools needed to launch community energy projects. They are working towards the implementation of projects across all of France, aiming for for the country to one day run on 100% renewable energies. Their methodology is designed to ensure projects’ success from start to finish.
How your donation helps
With your support, Énergie Partagée will answer the urgent need for renewable energy sources that can be implemented on a large scale, and will reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Developing locally-owned, decentralised and renewable energy production is the best way for communities to become more resilient, sustainable and climate-friendly.
Believing in climate solutions “by all, for all”, they want communities to have power over projects in their regions. This starts with awareness, and Énergie Partagée knows how to communicate the message. With funding, they can have greater impact and reach.
Énergie Partagée support 500 new citizen renewable energy projects by 2025, creating positive environmental and social impacts in alliance with local stakeholders.
Education and training of at least 500 citizens, elected officials and civil servants on renewable energy projects and how to co-design them with communities.
Énergie Partagée creates new partnerships with energy companies and local authorities for community energy projects.
Developing new evidence-based tools for communicating on the positive and social impacts of community energy projects.
